Tectonic plates
What are the tectonic plates?
Tectonic plates, also known as lithospheric plates, are giant slabs of rocks. the plate sizes vary. They move around slowly, some countries are on top of 2 or more tectonic plates, so when they move this causes and earthquake. Japan and New Zealand are more prone to having earthquakes due to this. When the plates shift, it can also cause tsunamis, when they shift this can suck in water from the ocean, and when shifting back this causes the tsunami to start heading back to land. This causes millions of dollars of destruction and life loss.
Tectonic plates are also what caused the continents to separate apart. all the continents started as one piece of land, but after time they separated and became separate continents. Each plate can vary from 70km and 700km in depth.
